How to read this guide

We've grouped picks into four price tiers. Each tier picks one "default" choice (most recognisable / safest value) plus two alternatives with different vibes. Prices are Field-Tested cheapest from our live catalog at the time of writing — check the linked skin pages for current marketplace pricing.

Under $5 — entry level

Plenty of strong AK-47 skins exist below the $5 line. You don't need to spend much to look distinct.

Default pick: AK-47 | Redline in Field-Tested ($3-5). Iconic red panels on matte black, immediately recognisable in-game, one of the most-traded skins in CS history. The wear blends well past 0.20 float — Battle-Scarred isn't worth the saving over FT for this skin.

Alternatives: Phantom Disruptor for a cleaner, more futuristic look at around $2; Safari Mesh if you want a literal "no skin" tactical look at sub-$1.

$5–50 — mid tier

The sweet spot. AKs in this range look genuinely premium without committing to triple-digit pricing. Most players never need to spend more than this.

Default pick: AK-47 | Neon Rider in Minimal Wear ($30-45). One of Valve's most-loved synth-wave finishes — clean magenta and cyan over black, hand-painted feel. The MW float keeps the artwork crisp.

Alternatives: Bloodsport in Field-Tested ($35-50) for the most "esports loadout" vibe; The Empress in FT (~$40) for Renaissance-painting art with one of the cleanest receiver decals on any AK.

$50–500 — premium

This is where collector-grade AKs start. Either lower-wear variants of the mid-tier favourites or genuinely scarce Covert finishes.

Default pick: AK-47 | Asiimov in Field-Tested ($90-130). The white-and-orange Asiimov family defines CS aesthetics for many players. Field-Tested wears in nicely without paying the FN premium for an artwork that's intentionally weathered.

Alternatives: Vulcan in MW (~$200) for one of the cleanest carbon-fibre + orange motifs ever shipped; Aquamarine Revenge for a different palette in the $80-150 range.

$500–5,000 — collector tier

Now you're in old Covert and StatTrak Asiimov-Factory-New territory. Lower-wear variants of legacy AKs and the rare Souvenir editions.

Default pick: AK-47 | Case Hardened with a good blue pattern ($600-3,000+ depending on Blue Gem scaling). Case Hardened skins are pattern-graded — the more blue on the receiver the higher the price, and a "Blue Gem" (pattern 661 / 670 / 955) can list at $10K+.

Alternatives: Fire Serpent Field-Tested ($800-1,500) — one of the most desired Operation Bravo classics; StatTrak Asiimov Minimal Wear at $400-700 for the kill counter on a cult finish.

Above $5,000 — flagship tier

Only buy at this level if you're collecting or speculating. Common targets:

  • AK-47 | Wild Lotus — Covert from the Norse Collection. $4,000+ Field-Tested, $8,000+ Minimal Wear. Sub-100 listings worldwide at any given time.
  • AK-47 | Gold Arabesque in Factory New — painstaking Persian-style art on gold, $3,000-5,000.
  • Souvenir AK-47 | Fire Serpent FN from Operation Bravo — $50,000+ when one comes up. Effectively non-existent supply.

What to check before paying

  • Wear float. AKs are wear-sensitive — Asiimov is designed to look worn but Wild Lotus painting cracks become obvious past 0.20 float. Pay attention to the float on the listing, not just the wear category.
  • StatTrak. Adds 30-80% depending on the finish. Worth it for AKs you'll actually play with — the kill counter is permanent.
  • Pattern. Case Hardened, Fire Serpent, Wild Lotus and a few other AKs are pattern-graded. Always check the pattern index on the listing before paying premium prices.
  • Source marketplace. Our live "Wear & prices" grid on every AK page shows the price across dozens of marketplaces. Don't buy from the first Steam offer — lower-fee third-party marketplaces typically undercut Steam by 8–25%.
